800-pound boulder falls onto Sun Road near Logan Pass

By Beacon Staff

Park employees responded to a fallen boulder on the Going-to-the-Sun Road Wednesday night, and motorists are being reminded to drive with care along the newly opened thoroughfare.

At roughly 10:30 p.m. last night, park dispatch received a report of a large pile of snow and a very large boulder blocking the west-bound lane of the road approximately 1.5 miles west of Logan Pass. No injuries or damage were reported.

Park road crew members removed the snow and boulder by 1:30 a.m. this morning. The boulder was estimated to be approximately 800 pounds.

The Sun Road was opened to vehicle access to Logan Pass at 8 p.m. Wednesday night.

Travelers along the road are reminded to drive with care, spokesperson Denise Germann said. Standing or walking on snow along the road is strongly discouraged, as is parking or stopping in areas of snow located above the road.

There are vehicle size restrictions on the Sun Road. Vehicles, and vehicle combinations, longer than 21 feet or wider than 8 feet are prohibited between Avalanche Campground and Rising Sun. Vehicles over 10 feet in height are not advised to travel west from Logan Pass. For more information on vehicle size restrictions visit the park’s website.
