HELENA — Montana wildlife regulators have set the next wolf hunting and trapping season.
The Fish and Wildlife Commission voted Thursday for archery season to run from Sept. 7 through Sept. 14, with rifle season opening Sept. 15 and closing March 15.
There are no quotas except for limits of six wolves across two management areas near Yellowstone National Park, and two wolves outside Glacier National Park.
Last season, hunters killed 144 wolves and trappers an additional 86.
Commissioners also approved a quota for killing wolves that are potential threats to livestock or public safety. Landowners statewide will be allowed to kill 100 such wolves, though separate commission authorization would be needed for every 25 wolves killed.
Landowners who kill wolves in the act of attacking livestock are not subject to the quota.
