Lace up the running shoes and compete for the title of King and Queen of the mountain.

In its 32nd year, the Big Mountain Run is this weekend at Whitefish Mountain Resort. The race begins at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 9 at the base of the mountain. All proceeds from the event benefit the nonprofit Glacier Nordi Ski Team’s programs for youth. Cost is $15 per individual, $8 for juniors 16 and under and $35 per family.

Runners will travel the Danny On Trail for 3.8 miles, traversing up the mountain to the finish line at the summit. Hikers are welcome, along with dogs, although pets are not allowed to ride the chairlift down afterward. Participants will compete for the title King and Queen and Prince and Princess of the Mountain.

Dogs, with a runner, will compete for Dam and Sire of the Mountain. An awards ceremony will follow the race.

Can’t make the trek to Whitefish? The fourth annual Bigfork River Run 5K is at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The race is a fundraiser for the Bigfork High School Cross Country team. Cost is $17 for runners 13 and over and $12 for 12 and under. Racers will travel the scenic Swan River Trail.

A handcrafted Morley Canoe paddle will be awarded to the top female and male finisher. There will also be great age-group awards and raffle prizes.
