Fort Benton to Play JV Football Schedule

Player shortage leads to Fort Benton losing its varsity football team

GREAT FALLS — The Montana High School Association denied Fort Benton’s request for an emergency football co-op with Great Falls Central Catholic.

MHSA executive director Mark Beckman said Thursday the request wasn’t made by the Feb. 1 deadline and the combined enrollment of the two schools — 191 students — far exceeded the Class C co-op cap of 131 students.

Fort Benton athletic director Bob Schoonover told the Great Falls Tribune the school will play a junior varsity schedule after their running back suffered a season-ending knee injury, two players were declared academically ineligible and another left the team.

Beckman said the MHSA would let Fort Benton schedule JV games with Class B and 6-Man competition if they wanted to play more games.

Fort Benton will play the Cascade JV on Tuesday.
