BILLINGS — State health officials say Montana has seen at least 10 laboratory confirmed cases of enterovirus-D68 involving children younger than 16.
The Department of Public Health and Human Services says all of the children were hospitalized at some point.
The Billings Gazette reports two cases of the respiratory illness have been confirmed in both Yellowstone and Lewis and Clark counties, with one each in Cascade, Jefferson, Musselshell, Fergus, Gallatin and Valley counties.
Through Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had confirmed infections in 780 people in 46 states and the District of Columbia.
Enterovirus-D68 is a more virulent strain of the virus that causes the common cold. Children with serious infections have been hospitalized and some needed to be placed on a breathing machine.
