BILLINGS — National Weather Service forecasters say dangerous cold weather will persist across much of Montana into Thursday morning.

Forecasters say eastern Montana temperatures could reach 10 to 20 below zero. Wind chill warnings were issued in western and northeast Montana.

Some of the most extreme temperatures were expected for Cooke City and surrounding mountain valleys, where temperatures could drop as low as 15 to 30 below zero.

The weather service cautioned that frostbite can develop on exposed skin in just 15 minutes under such bitter conditions.
