The high school football season is down to its final two weeks and three teams from the Flathead Valley are still competing for championship glory.
Glacier, Whitefish and Bigfork are all playing in semifinal games this weekend, starting with tonight’s showdown in Legends Stadium.
The Glacier Wolfpack take on the Missoula Big Sky Eagles in the semifinal round of the Class AA playoffs. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
It’s bound to be a cold one. The temperatures are forecasted to drop into single digits tonight. Saturday afternoon is expected to be 14 to 18 degrees around the valley.
Top-ranked Glacier (11-0) is playing in the semifinals for a fourth consecutive year and hopes to advance to next week’s state championship game for the second year in a row. The Wolfpack lost to Bozeman 24-14 in last year’s title game.
Glacier defeated Big Sky 49-13 earlier this season. The Eagles are 8-3.
Glacier is seeking to win its first state title and the first championship for a Kalispell team since 1970, when the Flathead Braves earned the trophy after finishing the regular season with the best record, 9-0-1. The previous Kalispell team to play in a postseason championship game and win was the 1959 Braves, who defeated Butte 39-0 and claimed their second straight title.
If Glacier wins tonight, it would host the state championship game next Friday. It would be the first time the state title game took place in Kalispell since 1980. Great Falls C.M. Russell defeated Flathead that year, 25-0.
Helena and Great Falls C.M. Russell play in tonight’s other AA semifinal game.
On Saturday, Whitefish (8-2) will host Butte Central (9-1) at 1 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium in the semifinal round of the Class A playoffs.
The Bulldogs are playing in the semifinals for the first time since 2002. They are seeking to advance to the title game for the first time since 2001. Fergus defeated Whitefish that year 12-9. Whitefish has won the state title once, 1979, defeating Powell Co. 14-7.
Whitefish would host next weekend’s title contest. Dillon and Billings Central are playing in the other semifinal game tomorrow.
In Bigfork, the Vikings (9-1) are hosting Huntley Project (11-0) n the Class B playoffs at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Vikings are playing in the semifinals for the third time since 2010, when Bigfork won its first state championship.
Bigfork has won nine straight games and outscored its last nine opponents 413-34.
Huntley Project eliminated top-ranked Fairview last week, 21-7.
Bigfork would travel to either Conrad or Townsend for next week’s title contest.
