Smith Lake Family Fishing Derby

Smith Lake Ice Fishing Derby is one of the oldest annual fishing derbies in the state

By Dillon Tabish

The annual Smith Lake Ice Fishing Derby is one of the oldest annual fishing derbies in the state, spanning over 40 years. Held west of Kalispell on Dec. 27, the family friendly event is being put on once again by the Sunriser Lions Club as a public service to the community and to raise funds for family fishing pond programs in the valley. Last year’s event drew over 400 anglers. Walleyes Unlimited provided 70 fishing rod-and-reel combinations for kids and for those who needed a rod, and anglers landed hundreds of small pike and perch. Anglers also donated some pike to the Hooked on Fishing program for dissection exercises. The Lions operated a food stand offering hamburgers, chili, and other items.

This year’s event features contests for largest and smallest yellow perch, northern pike and suckers. There will be a warming fire and a trailer with hot drinks, chili, hot dogs and hamburgers. The event is co-sponsored by Sportsman & Ski Haus, Flathead Wildlife, Inc., and Walleyes Unlimited.

The event runs 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Dec. 27.
