FVCC Hosts Wilderness Speaker Series

Events sponsored by Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation and Montana Wilderness Association Flathead-Kootenai Chapter

By Beacon Staff

Flathead Valley Community College will host a three-part Wilderness Speaker Series for the community.

Sponsored by the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation and Montana Wilderness Association Flathead-Kootenai Chapter, the event will be free and open to the public and will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Arts & Technology building on the college’s Kalispell campus.

The series will open Feb. 5 with “Wilderness Management 101” presented by Deb Mucklow. She will bring 16 years of experience as a district ranger working in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex to her presentation that will focus on the complex challenges of managing wilderness in today’s society while maintaining wilderness character. Mucklow will share insights on the balance needed between today’s technology, tools, experience and Wilderness Act expectations.

The series will continue March 5 with “The Wild is Consequential: Grizzlies, People and Sharing the Land” by Steve Primm. In his presentation, Primm will discuss the critical work being done to connect the wild lands of the Yellowstone grizzly population to the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem population. In addition to working on grizzly bear recovery in the Yellowstone Ecosystem for many years, he runs People and Carnivores, an organization which focuses largely on private land conservation for grizzlies and wolves.

The series will conclude April 2 with “A Walk on the Wild Side; A 200 mile hike in the spirit of Bob Marshall” by Hungry Horse News Reporter and Glacier Park Magazine Publisher and Editor Chris Peterson. Peterson will present a slide show on the tales from his adventure last year when he partially retraced Bob’s 288-mile hike through what is now the Bob Marshall Wilderness.
