The Flathead Valley Community College Board of Trustees will vote on a new member out of 10 applicants at a special meeting on Thursday, Feb. 5.

Ten people are seeking to fill the board position previously held by Ralene Sliter, who passed away Jan. 7 after a three-year battle with breast cancer. She was 68.

The people who applied to fill the vacant position were Chance Barrett of Kalispell, Amy Dexter of Somers, William Gehling of Lakeside, Sandi Grob of Kalispell, Ted Koenig of Kalispell, Terry R. Kramer of Kalispell, Clint Kreitner of Kalispell, Callie Langohr of Kalispell, Keith Ori of Kalispell and Shari Roubinek of Kalispell.

The remaining six trustees will vote on the replacement at 4 p.m. on the campus of FVCC. The new board member will fill out the remainder of the term, which ends in May. That person can then re-run for another three-year term.

The FVCC Board of Trustees is the governing body of the college. The trustees are charged with the primary responsibilities of establishing college policies and selecting a president to administer the operations of the institution. The seven members are elected by the citizens of Flathead County and serve three-year terms, on a rotating basis, with elections held yearly on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in May.

Sliter came to the Flathead Valley in 1979. She joined the FVCC Board of Trustees in May 2006. She served on the FVCC Foundation Board since 2000 and played an instrumental role in raising money for student scholarships by assisting with the planning of Foundation special events such as Christmas Tree Excellence and Springtime in the Rockies.

Sliter graduated from Valparaiso University in Indiana where she majored in history and geography and then worked for IBM in Chicago before becoming a full-time mom to raise her four children. She formerly served as League of the Glacier Orchestra president, member of the Glacier Orchestra Board and hospital volunteer at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.
