Attorney General’s Office to Review Fatal Libby Shooting

No charges have been filed in the Dec. 26 shooting death of Michael Leonard Roloff

More than two months after a Kalispell man was shot and killed in Libby, the Lincoln County Attorney’s Office is sending the case to the Montana Attorney General for review.

Michael Leonard Roloff, 31, was killed on Dec. 26, 2014 while visiting family in Libby. No charges have been filed against the alleged shooter, his mother-in-law, Lois Kay Olbekson, and law enforcement officials in Libby have revealed little information about the incident.

According to Sheriff Roby Bowe, Olbekson called police at 10:17 p.m. on Dec. 26 and said that she had just shot Roloff after he threatened her.

When deputies arrived at the scene on Glendora Avenue in Libby about three minutes later, they found Roloff unresponsive and lying in the driveway of the home. Deputies performed CPR on him. The Libby Volunteer Ambulance took him to Cabinet Peaks Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at about 11 p.m.

According to John Barnes, director of communications for the Montana Department of Justice, the state’s Prosecution Services Bureau annually reviews about 100 cases at the request of local prosecutors. Although Barnes could not get into specifics about the Roloff shooting, he said that there are a variety of reasons the state would review a case. Barnes added that each case is unique and it is hard to determine how long a review may take.
