The body of a 40-year-old man from Virginia Beach, Virginia was discovered Tuesday in a vehicle parked along the Going-to-the-Sun Road about one mile from the foot of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park.

According to Denise Germann, management assistant at Glacier National Park, said an initial investigation indicates the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At approximately 10:15 a.m. on March 24, park dispatch received a call from three visitors who reported seeing a non-responsive male slumped over in a vehicle at one of the pull-outs along the road.

Park rangers found a deceased male slumped over the steering wheel. Park rangers and medics declared the man dead at the scene.

The Flathead County Coroner arrived at the scene and the body was transported to a local funeral home. The vehicle was impounded. The man’s next of kin was notified.

An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service in coordination with the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office.
