BILLINGS — Police have shot a bull that broke free from a stockyard and led officials on a four-mile chase through Montana’s largest city.

The Billings Gazette reports the bull escaped from the Public Auction Yards on Friday afternoon. It headed down the railroad tracks near the stockyard and then a street at the southern end of the city’s downtown area.

Police officers and stockyard workers chased the animal but failed to capture it. At one point, the bull charged officers as they attempted to corral it in an equipment yard.

An officer shot the bull behind a hotel along Interstate 90. Police Sgt. Jay Berry said the animal was shot at the owner’s request.
