With over 500 lakes, this corner of the state is a haven for boaters and paddlers seeking cool respite on warm summer days.

This weekend marks a fun celebration of recreating on the water. The annual Northwest Paddle Fest is at Wayfarers State Park, May 16-17. Montana State Parks is hosting the free event on the north shore of Flathead Lake with several collaborators, including Rocky Mountain Outfitter, Sportsman & Ski Haus, Paddlefish Sports and the Flathead Paddlers.

Participants will be able to demo kayaks, SUPs and other boats while also receiving guidance and tips for enjoying a day on the water. Refreshments will be provided.

The Paddle Fest annually attracts a couple hundred participants to the popular state park, which is tucked off Highway 35 only minutes from downtown Bigfork. The 67-acre park hugs the lake’s northeast shore and features almost every outdoor opportunity imaginable. There are 30 campsites available to tents and motorhomes with public restrooms, showers, water and an RV dump station. For boaters, there’s a smooth launch area. Swimmers have a designated section to safely recreate and fishermen have a rocky shoreline to cast from.

It’s also an ideal picnic setting, with grills, fire rings and tables.

A park manager is on duty. For more information visit stateparks.mt.gov or call 752-5501.
