HELENA – Montana’s commissioner of political practices is putting his proposed campaign finance regulations out for public comment.
Commissioner Jonathan Motl posted a notice on his agency’s website Friday saying a public hearing on the proposed rules will be held in Helena on Sept. 2 and 3. Comments may also be submitted to the commissioner’s office.
The proposed regulations were written after state legislators passed a law this year to increase disclosure requirements for corporations and committees, while following U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United ruling granting those groups free speech.
Motl has said the rules would allow corporate groups to spend money in campaigns, but they must say how much they’re spending, where the money came from and what it’s being spent on.
Motl must approve the final regulations before Oct. 1.
