Berry-Hungry Bears Lead to Glacier Campground Closure

St. Mary Campground is now closed on the east side

By Justin Franz

WEST GLACIER — Glacier National Park officials have closed a campground that is drawing bears because of its abundant crop of berries.

The St. Mary Campground had been open to only hard-sided camping since late last month because of bear activity. On Thursday, officials said even more bears have been attracted to the campground as they enter a period of feeding to prepare for hibernation.

The closure will last until bear activity decreases.

Park officials say no incidents between humans and bears have been reported.
