Dozens of people are combing a 40-square-mile area within the Beaverhead National Forest in hopes of finding a Kalispell hunter who was last seen more than a week ago.

Robert Carter Jr., 53, was reported missing on Sept. 19 when he did not return from a bow-hunting trip in the southwest corner of the state, near Wisdom. Carter was hunting alone in the Tie and Johnson Creek area and he last made contact with the outside world on Sept. 16, when he posted a message to Facebook.

According to Beaverhead County Sheriff Frank Kluesner, more than 40 people were looking for Carter on Thursday, including five dog teams. Flathead County Search and Rescue has also sent a team and Two Bear Air assisted in the search earlier the week. Kluesner said officials have found Kluesner’s truck and his campsite.

The area in which Carter was hunting is a dense forest and Kluesner said that has hampered search efforts.

“You want to be hopeful,” he said. “In the beginning this was a rescue mission, but that changes to a recovery mission at time goes on… You just never know until you know.”

If anyone has any information that could assist in locating Carter, please call the Beaverhead County Sheriff’s Office at (406) 683-3700.
