Hockaday Presents ‘Shadow Catcher’ Photography Exhibit

Exhibit focuses on life on Montana’s Indian reservations

By Justin Franz

A new photography exhibit focusing on life on Montana’s Indian reservations will go on display this month at Kalispell’s Hockaday Museum of Art. The exhibit, called “Shadow Catcher,” stems from a collection of photos taken by Harry Lee Harpster Jr. that was acquired by the museum in 2010. Many of the photos were taken on the Blackfeet and Rocky Boy Reservations between 1979 and 2001. “The negatives selected for printing focus on annual pow wows and rodeos, and are more documentary in nature than many of his images,” said curator Margaret S. Davis. “He captured with warmth and ease encampment scenes, preparations for parades and dancing, games of chance, the booths and vendors, spectators, and cowboy competitors.” The opening reception will be held Thursday, Jan. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m.  Admission is free for Hockaday members and $10 for non-members. The show runs from Jan. 7 to Feb. 20.
