Remains of Anaconda Man Who Died at Pearl Harbor Identified

The remains have been identified as Navy Ensign Lewis Stevens Stockdale

ANACONDA — The remains of a man who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor have been identified as an Anaconda man.

The Montana Standard reports that after nearly 75 years, the remains have been identified as Navy Ensign Lewis Stevens Stockdale. Stockdale was 27 when he served aboard the USS Oklahoma on Dec. 7, 1941. He was among 429 soldiers and sailors who died aboard the Oklahoma when it was torpedoed.

According to the Navy, Stockdale’s remains were among those of five U.S. sailors from the Oklahoma that were officially identified this week.

The other men identified this week were Chief Petty Officer Albert Hayden, 44, of Maryland; Seaman 2nd Class Dale Pearce, 21, of Kansas; Petty Officer 1st Class Vernon Luke, 43, of Wisconsin; and Chief Petty Officer Duff Gordon, 52, of Wisconsin.
