A man was hospitalized after being shot by two Kalispell police officers during a welfare check on Looking Glass Avenue on Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting occurred in a residential neighborhood off Three Mile Drive northwest of Kalispell shortly after 1 p.m. Sheriff Chuck Curry said the man was taken to the hospital and was undergoing surgery but that his condition is unknown at this time.

According to a press release from the Kalispell Police Department, the shooting occurred inside a home after two officers responded to a report of a suicidal woman. As the officers talked to the woman inside, a man came from a back room holding a rifle. The officers told the man to drop the weapon but he pointed it at the officers. Both officers shot the man, causing him to fall and drop the weapon.

After securing the scene, the officers provided first aid to the male until medical personnel arrived and took the man to Kalispell Regional Medical Center. The woman was not injured but was taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting and the two officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave, per department policy.

Police have not identified the man who was shot.

Portions of Looking Glass Avenue were closed to traffic Tuesday as the investigation continues.
