BILLINGS — Yellowstone County officials say workers discovered a decomposing body in an irrigation canal near Shepherd and that the person could have been dead for six months or more.

Sheriff Mike Linder says the body was found Tuesday morning by employees of Billings Bench Water Association.

An autopsy was planned Thursday where officials hope to determine the person’s sex, estimated age and height.

Law enforcement officers began reviewing missing person’s reports on Tuesday, but have not identified any that can be connected to the body. Linder says officials haven’t determined where the body entered the irrigation ditch.
