Kyle Dunfee was selected as the new head coach of the boys and girls golf teams at Flathead High School.

Dunfee replaces Jess Roper, who stepped down recently after four seasons as head coach.

“Kyle is extremely passionate about golf and working with Flathead students. He has a strong desire to lead the Flathead Golf Program forward,” Flathead Activities Director Bryce Wilson said. “He outlined his vision during the interview and provided a comprehensive plan on how he would like to bring the program to consistently compete in the top five AA programs year in and year out. He has seen the effects of positive culture and climate in a sports program and is excited to bring this synergy to the Golf program.”

A selection committee tabbed Dunfee out of three candidates who were interviewed, Wilson said. Dunfee will be recommended to the school board for an official hire.

A Kalispell native, Dunfee graduated from Flathead in 2006. He played on the golf team for four years and qualified for the Class AA state tournament twice. He said his goal is to restore Flathead’s tradition as a dominant program, similar to what it was in the late 1990s.

“I have a burning desire to get the program back to the top level of AA,” Dunfee said.

He said he plans to work with junior programs to help build a solid foundation that aids the high school level.

Dunfee is a physical education teacher at Peterson.
