Hiking the Dawson-Pitamakan Loop

Loop stretches for 17 miles in the southeastern section of Glacier National Park

By Amanda Rubano

The Dawson-Pitamakan Loop stretches for 17 miles in the southeastern section of Glacier National Park. The loop explores the best of the Two Medicine, and can be taken in either direction. In a clockwise direction, the trail begins with a 6.4-mile hike through Bighorn Basin to Dawson Pass. With a highly recommended .2-mile detour to No Name Lake, the views from this section will not disappoint. The trail cuts through fields of native wildflowers on your ascent to the pass. The pass overlooks a far-stretching view across Lewis Range.

As the trail continues, it takes you through a section of the Continental Divide to the Pitamakan Overlook. Veering around Mount Morgan and guiding you to the Pitamakan Pass, the views present a grandiose picture of the valley containing Old Man Lake. From here, climbers begin their descent through Dry Fork Valley, hiking around the eastern base of Rising Wolf Mountain, and returning back to the Two Medicine trailhead.
