ACLU Montana Memberships Triple, Donations Increase

Membership grew from 1,500 before Trump's campaign and election to about 4,300

HELENA — The ACLU of Montana says its membership has tripled and an interest from donors and supporters of civil liberties has been heightened.

The Missoulian reports the ACLU’s statewide membership grew from 1,500 before President Donald Trump’s campaign and election to about 4,300.

Organization officials say they saw an increase in interest even before the presidential election.

Executive Director of the ACLU of Montana Caitlin Borgmann says it’s too early to tell if the organization’s momentum will stay but think that a decrease in interest will mean there are no longer large threats to civil liberties.

The ACLU of Montana is primarily focused on criminal justice reform and radical justice issues such as the treatment of Native American students in schools and tribal jail condition.
