Hiking season is right around the corner, so it’s time get prepared for a summer of exploration.

Join Montana Wilderness Association for a basic map and compass skills course, hosted at Snappy Sport Senter with Silver Cloud Associates, LLC.

With almost 40 years of woods navigation experience, course instructor Brian Baxter will focus on proper reading of topographic maps, determining distance, map scaling, compass declination and learning to follow mapped routes in the field. Students will be able to analyze contour lines to determine steepness, distance and utilize a Silva Ranger compass with their topo map.

Participants should bring: a compass (Silva Ranger recommended, but not required), topographic quad map of their choice, water, lunch, pencils and a ruler. Topographic quad maps and compasses are available for purchase at Snappy’s.

After spending the morning in the classroom, participants will head into the field to apply their navigation skills. This course will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22 in the conference room of Snappy’s Sports Senter at 1400 Hwy 2 East, Kalispell, MT 59901.

This is a free course that is open to the public, but space is limited, so participants must register beforehand.
