A 44-year-old Kalispell man pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted robbery and theft on May 4 in Flathead County District Court.

Kalvin Alan Taylor is accused of waiting in the stairwell of a Kalispell hotel and trying to rob another man at knifepoint. He will stand trial in August.

According to court documents, Taylor was arrested in February on theft charges accusing him of stealing tools and weapons from multiple people in the Kalispell area. Taylor was then released on his own recognizance but then failed to appear for his arraignment a few weeks later.

On March 28, the Kalispell Police Department responded to a report of an attempted robbery on the south side of town. According to court records, a man staying at the hotel had won some money while gambling earlier in the day and he texted a woman asking if she would like to get dinner with him. The woman agreed and brought a friend along with her.

At some point, one of the women allegedly texted Taylor that he could make some “easy money” and that he should rob the man staying at the hotel. Taylor reportedly went to the hotel, followed the women inside and then waited in the stairwell for about an hour.

When the man and two women left the hotel room, Taylor allegedly jumped the victim in the stairwell. The victim was able to run downstairs and yelled to the front desk attendant to call 911. Taylor allegedly chased the man through the lobby and into the parking lot where he eventually attacked him with a knife. The victim was able to get back up and run to a nearby bar where he called 911.

If convicted, Taylor could face up to 70 years in prison.
