Cash-Strapped Montana Government Agencies Could Get $46M

Legislative Fiscal Division says it all depends on whether the financial year ends strongly on June 30

HELENA – Montana legislative analysts say there may be enough revenue to return millions of dollars to cash-strapped government agencies that slashed their spending over the past year.

Legislative Fiscal Division staffers told state lawmakers Monday it all depends on whether the financial year ends strongly on June 30 with the same growth rate seen through the rest of the year.

If it does, agencies that made cuts to fill the state’s budget hole would get back $45.7 million.

Another $45.7 million would go to a new budget stabilization fund and $44.4 million to the state’s general fund.

The state would also be on track to end the next financial year with $232 million in the bank. That includes about $65 million in one-time transfers from other accounts.

Final revenue figures won’t be available until late July.
