BOZEMAN — Authorities say a 72-year-old Montana man died after his kayak flipped in the Jefferson River.

Gallatin County sheriff’s officials said in a statement Monday that Bruce Vanlandingham of Bozeman was unresponsive when first responders reached him near the diversion dam south of Sappington Bridge.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital in Bozeman. The cause of death is being investigated by the Gallatin County sheriff and coroner.

Sheriff Brian Gootkin says the water was calm and Vanlandingham appeared to be doing everything right.
