Chalk up a little more history for Libby’s incomparable Ryggs Johnston.

The rising high school senior added another win — and tournament record — to his growing collection last week, rolling to the title at the 101st Montana Men’s State Amateur Championship at Butte Country Club July 19-21.

Johnston, a three-time Montana High School Association state champion and Arizona State University commit, fired a blistering second-round 62 (8-under par) to set the 101-year-old tournament’s all-time single round scoring record. Johnston’s worst round was a two-under 68 on Thursday, one that he followed with 62-67 for a three day total of 13-under 197. Joey Lovell (205) was second, followed by reigning Class AA MHSA champion Joey Moore (208).

Johnston owns the Class A and Class B all-time state tournament records in Montana and was a two-time Montana State Junior champion.
