A BNSF Railway freight train derailed near Cut Bank on Thursday afternoon.

According to BNSF spokesperson Ross Lane, 12 loaded grain cars derailed on a westbound freight train at approximately 1:23 p.m. No one was injured in the incident and no hazardous materials were spilled. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

The derailment stalled freight and passenger traffic across the region. Lane said it was unclear when the rail line across Northwest Montana would reopen.

Amtrak spokesperson Marc Magliari said passengers aboard the eastbound and westbound Empire Builder passenger trains were taking alternative transportation around the wreck.
