As the largest lake in the Kootenai National Forest, McGregor Lake covers about 1,500 acres and sits midway between Kalispell and Libby off U.S. Highway 2.
Home to a bountiful population of prime mackinaw trout, the body of water is a popular fishing hole, with the annual fishing derby at the Lodge at McGregor Lake taking place in February. Other water lovers enjoy this peaceful spot with boaters, swimmers and water skiers enjoying the lake. The remarkable clarity of the water along with the relatively impressive depth of the lake — it’s 220 feet at its deepest point with an average depth of 106 feet — make it a preferred practice spot for local scuba divers. Visitors can also pick huckleberries in a nearby area and hikers can walk 2.9 miles along the McGregor Lake Shoreline Trail.
The affiliated campground sits at an elevation of 3,900 feet at the west end of the lake nestled among young pines. It consists of 27 RV sites, including a host site, and has plentiful tables and fire rings as well as four tent sites along the lake. Campers also can access vault toilets and drinking water. There is a group site for larger groups, including a gravel-parking area.
