A 58-year-old Kalispell woman died in a crash on the U.S. Highway 93 bypass on Aug. 15.

Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry said Eve Kaaihue-Berardi died after she drove her northbound 1993 Mazda across the median on the bypass at about 3 p.m. on Wednesday and struck a southbound 2007 Ford Escape head on. She was wearing a seat belt.

According to the Kalispell Police Department, witnesses said Kaaihue-Berardi was traveling at a high rate of speed before crossing the concrete median and colliding with the SUV.

The female driver of the southbound car was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center for serious injuries sustained in the wreck.

KPD is still investigating, and said alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

The crash closed the northern end of the bypass at West Reserve Drive, one of the busiest intersections in the county. The bypass was inaccessible to drivers for several hours from West Reserve to Four Mile Drive while investigators did their work on the scene.
