Northwest Montana’s two best volleyball teams tangled in the third-place match of the sprawling Missoula County Public Schools Invitational Tournament on Oct. 19, with Flathead High School taking down Libby 17-25, 25-16, 15-11.

The two-day event began with pool play on Oct. 18, with the results splitting the field into consolation and championship brackets. In the championship bracket, Flathead, Libby and Glacier all lost their first matches, but the Loggers bounced back to beat the Wolfpack in a loser-out battle and Flathead upended Missoula Sentinel. One round later, Libby downed Class B power Florence-Carlton and the Bravettes upset top-ranked Helena for the second time in less than a week.

Columbia Falls, Whitefish and Polson were also at the tournament, but all ended up in the consolation bracket.

Helena Capital won the tournament championship, downing Corvallis in the final match, while Missoula Hellgate topped Great Falls High to claim first place in the consolation bracket.
