New DEQ director was previously at EPA under Obama

HELENA — Montana’s governor has named a former regional administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency in Denver as the new director of the state Department of Environmental Quality.

Gov. Steve Bullock says Shaun McGrath will begin his new job on Dec. 1. McGrath takes over for Tom Livers, who is now the state budget director.

McGrath says he believes the state can have a strong economy while also protecting the environment.

McGrath was a program director for the Western Governors Association from 1995-2009 and was on the Boulder, Colorado city council from 2003-09, serving as mayor from 2007-09.

He was the deputy director for the White House Office of Intergovernmental Relations during the first two years of the Obama administration, serving as a liaison with governors.

Bullock says McGrath has decades of experience in seeking bipartisan solutions to issues.
