HELENA — A firearms safety instructor has pleaded not guilty to negligent homicide in a doctor’s shooting death after a hunting trip.

The Independent Record reports 62-year-old Gregg Robert Trude of Helena also pleaded not guilty to evidence tampering in the Oct. 21 shooting death of 48-year-old Eugene “Buzz” Walton II in the parking lot of the former Kmart store.

Trude was booked and released after his court appearance on Dec. 10. He cannot leave the state without court permission and is not allowed to possess firearms or other weapons.

Trude is the executive director for Montana Right to Life and lost the Republican primary for a state House seat representing a district south of Helena. His legislative candidate survey and his LinkedIn profile say he is a firearms safety instructor.
