BILLINGS – A former postmaster in eastern Montana has been sentenced to probation for trying to hamper a state investigation into the meth ring from which he received his drugs.
Federal prosecutors said 59-year-old Stephen Michael Miller of Miles City warned a meth dealer that police were monitoring drug shipments and intercepted and delivered a package himself in exchange for meth.
The Billings Gazette reports defense attorney Matthew Wald argued in court documents that Miller did so “because he was afraid to lose the source of the drugs upon which he had become dependent.”
U.S. District Judge Susan Watters sentenced Miller Wednesday to five years on probation for conspiracy to possess meth with intent to distribute. The conspiracy ran from 2013 to August 2015.
The dealer, James Toms, was sentenced to eight years in prison.
