BILLINGS — A former high school teacher in eastern Montana has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old student.

The Billings Gazette reports 38-year-old Morgan Pett was sentenced last week in Custer County District Court after he pleaded guilty to eight felony charges, including sexual intercourse without consent and sexual abuse of children.

According to court documents, the Miles City science teacher had sexual encounters with the girl six times during a three-week period from late 2016 to early 2017.

The documents state Pett’s wife reported him to police after finding out about the encounters.

Miles City Public Schools Superintendent Keith Campbell says Pett resigned from Custer County District High School in January 2017. He had worked for the district since 2008.
