BUTTE — A survey of a state hospital in western Montana identified a number of deficiencies in the treatment of geriatric patients, including unsanitary practices and inadequate care and staffing.
The Montana Standard reports the state Department of Public Health and Human Services conducted the survey of the facility in Warm Springs late last year following a complaint filed by Disability Rights Montana.
Officials surveyed nine patients in a unit that primarily serves older men and women with long-term psychiatric disabilities and medical concerns.
One patient said staff’s treatment was “degrading,” noting she was not provided with a catheter and physical therapy and her incontinence was discussed in front of others.
Another patient reported long periods without baths.
Officials say the department has already taken steps to correct the problems.
