Nelson’s Ace Hardware, which celebrated its 70th anniversary last year, will move into its new location on U.S. Highway 93 in south Whitefish on March 4.

The hardware store had outgrown its previous downtown store on Central Avenue. The shop was leasing a warehouse and three storage units, but still needed more room to sell its roughly 50,000 different types of items.

The new building, located in the former Army-Navy building, is 14,000 square feet, which will provide far more space for its inventory and allow it to display lawn furniture, mowers and grills.

Rick Nelson took over the business from his parents in 1972 at the age of 24, and owned it with his brother Don Nelson until 2003, when Don retired.

Rick and his wife, Marilyn, have continued to cement the store’s standing as a landmark business in Whitefish. The move allows them to continue evolving into the future.
