Senate President Scott Sales to Run for Secretary of State

Sales says he'd like to continue Stapleton's efforts to streamline the office's operations

HELENA – Montana Senate President Scott Sales is running for secretary of state after 16 years in the Legislature.

The Republican from Bozeman said Monday that he has filed paperwork to start fundraising.

Secretary of State Corey Stapleton is running for governor.

Sales, 58, says he plans to meet with clerks and recorders to learn what would make their jobs easier while protecting election security.

He says he has concerns about same-day voter registration and notes more people are voting via mail.

Sales says he’d like to continue Stapleton’s efforts to streamline the office’s operations, which has included reducing the number of employees.

If elected Sales would become a member of the Land Board. He says he’d like to see more access and development while protecting the environment.
