Flooding Closes Interstate 90 in Eastern Montana

Caused by rapid snow melt and ice jams along the Little Bighorn River

BILLINGS — Flooding has shut down Interstate 90 in eastern Montana.

An approximately 60 mile (96 kilometer) stretch of the highway between the town of Hardin and the Wyoming border remained closed Monday because of rapid snow melt and ice jams along the Little Bighorn River.

National Weather Service meteorologist Julie Arthur told The Billings Gazette the river appears to have crested Sunday.

A spokesman for the Crow Tribe, Justin Stewart, said the tribe has been working to help people in remote locations or without drinking water because water from recently repaired water mains haven’t been deemed safe to drink yet.

Meanwhile, authorities said Sunday that a home in Vaughn, near Great Falls, was surrounded by floodwater. Firefighters and the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office said the family hasn’t asked to be evacuated.
