MISSOULA – Officials are looking for solutions to reopen the only jail in a western Montana county that closed earlier this year after losing its staff.
The Missoulian reported Wednesday that Mineral County is expecting a visit by an official from Community, Counseling, and Correctional Services Inc. to help find solutions to keep the jail open.
The nonprofit organization has created pre-release programs, addiction treatment centers and other services for jails in the state.
The jail in Superior closed in October 2017 when three of its jailers quit. It reopened in March 2018, but it closed again in January.
The sheriff’s office currently sends inmates to jails in neighboring counties.
County attorney Ellen Donohue says housing inmates in Sanders County cost $20,000 in April, not including transportation costs and overtime for deputies.
