HELENA — A former Helena police officer has pleaded guilty to felony theft in a Montana court.

The Independent Record reports that Tyler Wood received a deferred three-year prison sentence after his guilty plea Thursday.

Wood was accused of using Helena Police Protective Association funds to make more than $6,800 worth of personal purchases.

Wood has already paid restitution and court fees, and he relinquished his police certification. He will be eligible to petition for dismissal of the charge after 18 months.

The association serves sworn officers and support staff of the Helena Police Department and is primarily funded through fundraising and the monthly dues paid by its members. Wood was the organization’s treasurer and primary fundraiser for two years.

He also had been a school resource officer.
