BUTTE — Former Flathead High School football coach Kyle Samson was named the interim head coach at Montana Tech on Jan. 6, one day after Chuck Morrell left the Orediggers to join the staff at Fresno State.

Samson led the Braves from 2014-18, taking Flathead to the Class AA state championship game in 2018, the program’s first appearance in 18 years. The Helena native turned around a struggling Braves program and led the team to 15 wins in his last two seasons at the helm. Samson was a college coach before arriving in Kalispell, serving as an assistant at Montana State-Northern, his alma mater. He was Montana Tech’s offensive coordinator in 2019.

Morrell led Montana Tech to a 52-44 record in nine seasons in Butte, a tenure that included three Frontier Conference titles. Montana Tech Athletic Director Matt Stephan said the search for Morrell’s permanent replacement will be “fast and efficient,” according to the Associated Press.
