Lake County authorities recovered the body of a man who a witness says was swept away in the Flathead River on July 18 while cliff jumping west of Polson.

Dayton Conrad’s body was recovered at about 11 p.m. on July 23 near Buffalo Bridge.

Conrad, 21, of Ronan, had last been seen attempting to swim to shore after jumping off the cliffs near Buffalo Rapids, a popular swimming area below SKQ Dam. At about 5:15 p.m. that day, Conrad’s friend called 911 to report the man missing, saying Conrad had been pulled under water by the current.

The friend left the area to obtain cell service to contact authorities, and emergency personnel from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Lake County Search and Rescue, Two Bear Air Rescue, and Finley Point Fire all assisted in the initial search.
