Flathead Valley high schools have kicked off the fall sports season with several late August golf tournaments.

On Monday, Class A schools teed off at the Whitefish Invitational. Whitefish’s Cameron Kahle took medalist honors and shot 68 leading Billy Smith, Johnny Nix and Bjorn Olsen for the sweep. The Bulldogs shot 305 to take the team competition ahead of Polson’s 351. On the girl’s side, Polson just edged Whitefish, shooting 383 to 398, with Polson’s Ellie Thiel coming out on top by eight strokes.

Three days later, the Whitefish boys golf team came back for another first place finish at the Ronan Invitational Golf Tournament on Thursday, carding 309 to finish well ahead of Hamilton. Smith led the Bulldogs in Ronan, firing a 67.

Missoula County held its first sanctioned sporting event of the season with the Missoula Invitational Golf Tournament on Tuesday. Flathead’s Marcella Mercer was the girls’ medalist, leading the Bravettes to a second place finish ahead of Glacier. Mercer fired a 73 for a six-stroke victory, her second win this season.

Glacier’s boys finished second in the team race, just four strokes behind Sentinel. The Wolfpack was lead by Keaton Cassidy and Tyler Avery who tied for fourth.

Prep soccer took to the pitch for the first time this season Thursday night with Glacier and Flathead facing off against each other.

The Wolfpack shut out their town rivals in both the boys and girls varsity games, with the Glacier boys team scoring six goals for a dominating 6-0 win.

The Wolfpack girls kept up the momentum later in the evening. Taylor Brisendine scored in the 28th minute to put the Wolfpack up going in to the half. Second half goals by Kenzie Williams and Ady Powell plus an additional score by Brisendine in the last five minutes gave the Wolfpack a 4-0 victory.
