Grizzly Bear Moved from WMA Near Kalispell

Montana wildlife officials have captured and relocated a 3-year-old grizzly bear from a wildlife management area near Kalispell to Elk Mountain 25 miles away.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials captured the male grizzly Wednesday morning at Kuhns Wildlife Management Area 10 miles from Kalispell. On Monday, a bow hunter encountered the grizzly in the same area while tracking a wounded deer.

FWP officials say the hunter came upon the bear on the carcass and it came toward him. The hunter yelled and the bear left.

FWP officials say a culvert trap was set as a pre-emptive move in the interest of public safety.

The bear was fitted with a radio collar and released on the Stillwater-Kootenai divide, a site approved to release nuisance grizzly bears.
