MILES CITY – Wrecking crews have knocked down several unstable walls that were left standing after a fire raged through a block of historic buildings on Main Street here.
Fire Chief Derrick Rodgers said Thursday’s demolition created a safer environment for investigators, and the crews were able to salvage some items including columns and signs.
“Everything has been pretty well taken care of as far as the site goes,” he said. “There are still a couple of little hot spots under some of the rubble that we’re keeping an eye on, but everything has been going as smoothly as it can be in this situation.”
Roads around the fire’s perimeter remain closed, but could open Friday, Rodgers said.
Monday’s fire destroyed at least nine buildings, damaged several others and affected about 50 employees. Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the blaze, which is believed to have started in a vacant building being remodeled in the center of the block.
