LETTER: Thank Former President Bush Indeed

By Beacon Staff

Jim Clark’s letter (Feb. 3 Beacon: “Now a Nation of Big Business”) about the Supreme Court’s decision on campaign finance left out a very important point and was factually incorrect on another. The unions were also included in the decision along with corporations. Union membership comprises about 12 percent of the working people of this nation. They have tremendous amounts of money for political purposes. The influence the unions have far outweighs their numbers as is evidenced by their access to the president and the Democrats. Does that make the United States a nation of big unions, for big unions, and by big unions. I think not.

Also, the decision did not reverse the prohibition of direct contributions to candidates by corps and unions. The decision did not reverse the ban on contributions by unions and corporations to the political parties. Lastly, former President George W. Bush nominated Supreme Court justices whom he thought would follow the Constitution. Which is what they did. In this case we agree. Thank you George Bush.
