An altercation in front of a duplex near Marion ended in a fatal shooting early Sunday morning, and an expected murder charge for one of the men involved.

According to the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, Mark Bolton Ames, 52, was arrested and jailed for allegedly killing Harold Gordon, 60. The Flathead County Attorney’s Office was expecting to officially file a murder charge against Ames by Jan. 14.

The shooting happened at about 1:45 a.m. on Jan. 12, outside of a duplex owned by one of the men involved. Ames’ wife rented one of the apartments, and Gordon lived in the other apartment.

There was an altercation outside the duplex, the sheriff’s office reported, and Ames allegedly fired multiple rounds into Gordon’s apartment. The two men then confronted each other outside the residences, where Ames allegedly fatally wounded Gordon.

Undersheriff Dave Leib said Gordon was hit twice, at close range.

The sheriff’s office reported that both men were armed during the incident. Responding personnel took Gordon to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
